Cristoforo Decaro
Post-doctoral researcher
I am a postdoctoral researcher at Translational Medical Device Lab, based in Galway.
I am from Licata, a small town in the wonderful Sicily and then I moved to Turin, Copenaghen, Bologna, Milan and now I am living on another wonderful island, Ireland.
Here, I have the opportunity to develop medical devices that have an impact on patient care.
I have been joining two of the most important biomedical areas in Europe: Mirandola and Galway.
My adventure into medical devices started during my PhD at the University of Ferrara, the project involved the development of a new device that improves haemodialysis.
During my career, I worked on different projects from wound care to intravenous stimulator for venous diseases.
In my spare time, I use to play all kind of sports from basketball to soccer or just running. I am also passionate about AI and I love travelling.
My motto is: “If you don't believe in yourself, no one will do it for you”
What advice would you give to a young professional interested in following your steps?
Follow your passions. I am an engineer and, some years ago, I understood that what I most like is applied my technical skills to something tangible for people. The world of research could be long and full of uncertainties, but it is also gratifying and it opens your mind. During research projects, you can manage and optimize the most advanced technologies. There is no routine: each day is different when you work on research projects and each day can be the turning point for your success.
